Belgian Waffles…

It’s always a little frightening to see old pictures of yourself… This one was recently sent from an old training partner in Belgium.  My memories of Belgium all include rain, so it’s interesting to see that it didn’t ALWAYS rain.  This pic was sent on the very same day that my wife brought home a package of Belgian waffles.

She thought they would be good for breakfast, but upon closer inspection, I found that they were, in fact, real Belgian waffles – from Leffe.  Real Belgian waffles have huge sugar crystal in them, giving them a crunch.  In Belgium, waffles are more a dessert item than a breakfast item.  We used to take these treats with us on long rides, or we would stop along the ride at a waffle cart for these sweets.

This recollection into the past got me to thinking about how I’ve gotten away from taking “real” food on my long rides.  Instead, I’ve been taking all sorts of gels and bars – and never do I LOOK forward to eating these items.   My next ride: Belgian waffles in my rear pocket…

Bring Belgian waffles next time you come to San Jose. Love the old helmet.

Funny, all I seem to remember is dried oats and soy powder, the bucket I was given to pee in, and lots and lots of rain. And Etienne de Wilde’s offer to buy me a hooker because I looked “lonely.” But I digress…

Still have my old FdJ team issue “helmet,” though. Perfect for this time of year under a winter hat.

    Awesome blog.
