Hey Chuck,
a good spot in a crit is the outside (find a part of the course where this is out of the wind) - sometimes people don't like to ride close to the gutter, but this is a great spot to go by a good number of riders. or, if there's a spot where people soft pedal b/c you're coming to a corner; don't soft pedal...

Regarding rest and pre-race warm up: the time that you need to rest btw hard efforts depends on your fitness, but generally 1 to 2 days easy before a big race. You can throw in 2 or 3 200m sprints on those days if need be - this gets the muscles tight.

Pre-race: a lot of guys ride rollers before hand for 15-30 mins. No sprinting needed. You just don't want the legs to fill with lactic acid right off the bat - and crits generally go fast from the start...

Worry more about your general fitness than any specifics going into a race. If you're fit, you'll do well. The only necessary thing is that in a 45min + crit, you might want to bring a gel with caffeine for the last 20 mins...

Cheers.

Don:

What's your best strategy for moving forward in a fast moving crit on a tight course? Get out in the wind and muscle your way forward or work the gaps?

What is your preference for a pre-race ride? Hard or easy or just a few hard efforts? How many days from the race should you do a very hard ride?
